Can You Get Dental Implants With Gum Disease?

If you have gum disease in Dacula, GA or the greater Atlanta area, you may be wondering if you’re a good candidate for dental implants, especially if you’ve lost one or more of your teeth. Can you get dental implants with gum disease? In this blog from Quintero Periodontics, we’ll discuss everything you need to know.

You Will Not Qualify For Dental Implants If You Have Untreated Gum Disease

The short answer to your question is “no.” If you have serious, untreated gum disease, you will not qualify for dental implants. This is because if you have gum disease, the risk of infections and other complications after dental implant surgery will be much higher compared to a patient with a healthy mouth.

Not only that, but untreated gum disease can permanently damage the gums, jaw bone, and support structures of the teeth. To be successful, dental implants must be placed into healthy gums and a strong, dense part of your jaw bone. So if your gum and jaw tissue have been harmed by gum disease, it won’t be possible to place a dental implant properly.

You May Qualify For Dental Implants Once Your Gum Disease Is Under Control

If you have gum disease, don’t worry. While you can’t get dental implants if you have untreated gum disease, you may qualify as a candidate if you can get the proper treatment. While it’s often not possible to completely eliminate gum disease, it can be controlled with proper periodontal care from Dr. David Quintero and the team at Quintero Periodontics. And once your gum disease is under control and your mouth is healthy, you may qualify for tooth replacement with dental implants.

Gum Disease Treatment Options At Quintero Periodontics

If you have gum disease and you need treatment, you’re in the right place. At Quintero Periodontics, we offer a wide variety of treatments that will help treat and control your gum disease. Here are just a few of them:

  • Deep cleanings (scaling & root planing) – Deep cleanings are the first step in treating minor-to-moderate cases of gum disease. Dr. Quintero will use special instruments to clean between your gums and teeth, and to reduce bacterial “pockets” that form around the roots of your teeth.

  • LANAP laser therapy – LANAP laser therapy is an alternative to traditional gum flap surgery. In this treatment, Dr. Quintero will use a laser to remove and destroy infected gum tissue and to stimulate the growth of new, healthy bone and gum tissue.

  • Gum grafting/pinhole surgical technique (PST) – Gum grafting may be necessary if your gum disease has caused serious gum recession. In traditional gum grafting, tissue from the roof of your mouth is used to rebuild your gums. Dr. Quintero also offers treatment with the pinhole surgical technique (PST), which is a less-invasive alternative to traditional gum grafting.

  • Bone grafts – If you’ve had serious, chronic gum disease, your jaw bone may be weak and unhealthy. Bone grafts may be necessary to rebuild your jaw bone and prepare for a dental implant.
